“The Basics to Break the Binary: An Introduction to Trans and Gender Diverse Communities” by delfin bautista, MSW, MDiv.

delfin serves as the director of the LGBT Center at Ohio University. delfin holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and Master in Divinity from Yale University. delfin’s background includes chaplaincy, trauma therapy, faith-based advocacy, and child welfare. delfin also teaches for Ohio University’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program and the Social Work department. delfin uses “they/them” pronouns or their name.

Brief Description:

In order to break binaries, we first need to understand terminology and key concepts within the complex world of sexual and gender diversities. This session will also explore issues related to the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ individuals and how providers can become healthcare advocates and allies. The session will be a combination of lecture, activities, case studies, and open discussion.

 

Objectives:

1) Understand LGBTQ+ identities including terminology and key concepts of sexual and gender diversities
2) Introduce healthcare advocacy from a queer perspective
3) Understand the impact of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexism, cisgenderism, and other “isms” on wellbeing of LGBTQ+ communities
